Planning a Minecraft house before you build it
A ten-minute floor plan saves an hour of rebuilding. Wall heights, room sizes that feel right, door and window spacing, and counting materials.
Open the House PlannerPaint walls, doors and furniture on a grid, floor by floor, and get the block list. Most Minecraft houses get rebuilt because they were too small, too dark or the roof didn’t fit. A quick floor plan fixes all three.
Sizes that feel right
- Ceiling height: 3 blocks of air is minimum; 4 feels comfortable; 5+ for a great hall.
- Rooms: bedrooms 5×5 to 7×7 interior; a main room 9×7 or bigger; corridors 2 wide.
- Footprint: a 15×11 exterior gives a 13×9 interior — enough for three rooms on one floor.
- Roof: a pitched roof adds one block of height per block stepped in, so a 15-wide house gets a 7-block-high roof. Plan the attic or make the roof shallow.
Doors, windows, light
Windows every 3 blocks along a wall keep the inside bright enough to stop mob spawns (with a few torches). Put doors on the wall facing your most-used path and leave 1 block of clearance either side.
Use the planner
The House Planner is a grid you paint on: walls, windows, doors, floors and furniture symbols. Add a floor above to plan stairs and the roof (the floor below shows as a ghost). The materials panel multiplies walls by your wall height and counts everything else once, so you know how many logs to chop before you start.
From plan to world
- Mark the footprint corners in the world with a distinctive block.
- Lay the whole ground floor outline first, one block high, and walk it — check doors and room sizes feel right.
- Raise the walls to full height, then windows, then the roof.
- Interior last, using the plan’s furniture symbols as a placement guide.
