How to install a Minecraft skin (Java and Bedrock)

Where the skin button is on every platform, what classic and slim mean, and why your skin sometimes shows the wrong arms.

Open the AI Skin GeneratorDescribe a skin — or one word — and get a downloadable Minecraft skin.

You’ve got a PNG — from the AI Skin Generator, the Skin Editor or anywhere else. Here’s where it goes.

Java Edition

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and click Skins in the top bar.
  2. Click New skin, then Browse and pick your PNG.
  3. Choose the arm model: Classic (4-pixel arms, Steve) or Slim (3-pixel arms, Alex). Use the same model the skin was made for; the tools on MCrafter tell you which.
  4. Name it, click Save & use. It shows in-game immediately, including on servers.

Bedrock (Windows, console, mobile)

  1. From the main menu open the Dressing Room (the character button).
  2. Choose an empty character slot, go to Classic skins → Owned → Import.
  3. Pick the PNG and the matching arm model.

Consoles and some phones can’t browse files: send the PNG to yourself (cloud drive, email) and open it from that app.

Wrong arms?

If the sleeves look torn or transparent, the arm model doesn’t match the skin. Slim skins have transparent pixels where the fourth arm column would be; loading one as classic shows holes, and loading a classic skin as slim crops it. Switch the model in the launcher — you don’t need to re-export.

Old 64×32 skins

The tools on this site accept the old format and convert it to the modern 64×64 layout automatically, which is what both editions expect now.
